Junior Livestock Test at the Utah State Fair
Competition Guidelines

Date: Saturday, September 16, 2017 - 9 a.m. at the Specialty Tent, which is south of the Giant Yellow Slide (prior to the Buyer's Lunch). The only persons allowed in the testing area are youth taking the test and the test Administrators. No parents or friends should be in the testing area. Once tests have been distributed, no additional youth will be allowed to participate in the testing program.

Eligibility: All 4-H or FFA youth (3rd-12th grades as of October 1, 2017) exhibiting a lamb, hog, goat, or steer in the Utah State Fair Jr. Livestock show.

Livestock Tests: Exhibitors may choose to complete a sheep, swine, goat, or beef test, depending on the species he or she is exhibiting at the State Fair. If an exhibitor is showing more than one species at the State Fair, he or she may choose to take an additional test for that species. Each test will include true or false, multiple-choice, and fill in the blank questions. Questions will come from the Ohio State University livestock reference manuals and will include questions regarding selection, disease prevention, breeds, conformation, nutrition, etc. These manuals are available for purchase (or for loan in some counties) through your county's USU Extension office.

Age-appropriate tests will be prepared for the following three grade divisions:

- Junior Division (Grades 3rd-5th as of October 1, 2017) - 15 questions, plus bonus tie-breaker questions

- Intermediate Division (Grades 6th-8th as of October 1, 2017) - 20 questions, plus bonus tie-breaker questions

- Senior Division (Grades 9th-12th as of October 1, 2017) - 30 questions, plus bonus tie-breaker questions

Ties: Ties will be split based upon correct answers to the bonus questions. If tie remains once calculating scores from bonus questions, both youth will receive the award.

Awards: 1st-3rd place awards will be presented to the top youth in each grade division, for each livestock species. Additionally, each youth taking a test will receive a participant gift. Awards will be presented during the Junior Livestock Buyer's Lunch. The following awards will be presented:
